May 5, 2014—Snowmass Village, Colo.—All Snowmass Village Solid Waste and Recycling customers can now recycle new items, and place them all in a single bin thanks to the switch to single-stream recycling this month, following the transition at the Pitkin County Landfill and recycling centers.
With single-stream recycling programs, all recyclables go into a single bin making recycling at both curbside and dumpster sites in the Village easier and more efficient. In addition it expands the list of items that can be recycled. By eliminating sorting efforts, municipalities with single-stream programs often report higher recycling rates and decreased customer confusion.
Items now accepted in recycling bins include chipboard (cereal and beer boxes), office paper, magazines, phone books, and milk and juice cartons. This is in addition to plastics (number one through seven), cardboard, paperboard, glass food and drink containers, metal cans, aluminum, magazines, paper bags, and paperback books.
Items not accepted include plastic bags of any sort, ceramic dishware, foam food containers or styrofoam, or pizza boxes.
Proper disposal techniques are critical to make the program successful, as contamination remains the biggest challenge in maintaining a viable and cost-effective recycling program. The community is strongly encouraged to review accepted and not-accepted items and preparation and disposal tips available at all dumpster sites, and on the town’s website at www.tosv.com/recycle. There, you’ll find a printer-friendly flyer with recycling guidelines to place at your home or business.
In addition, recycling advice will be shared throughout the summer on social media using #ReducetheMass.
Because magazines, phone books, and office paper is now accepted in co-mingled recycling containers, the disposal bin for these items previously located at the Public Works Shop is no longer in service. The Department still offers an electronics disposal site at the shop located at 3745 Owl Creek Rd.
Please contact the Snowmass Village Public Works Solid Waste and Recycling Division at 970-923-5110 with any questions or comments regarding the new program.
