Snowmass Village, Colo.—June 9, 2013—Today, the Town of Snowmass Village announced the retirement of Chief of Police Art Smythe after 31 years with the Town, 25 of which he spent serving as Chief.

“This is a difficult decision, but I have met my personal and professional goals associated with my employment with the Town, and I feel it’s time to move on to the next chapter of my life,” Smythe said.

Under Smythe’s leadership, the Snowmass Village Police Department has consistently delivered public safety services in a manner which fosters mutual respect and cooperation between department personnel, residents, and guests of the community.

Accomplishments of his tenure include are most clearly visible in the stability and effectiveness of the team he has led. The Police Department has experienced a far above average retention rate. Also, Smythe’s approach to public safety—as a key guest and community service—has allowed the department to maintain positive partnerships both locally and regionally.

“Our Police Department is unique, and a true asset to our resort community,” said Snowmass Village Interim Town Manager Gary Suiter. “There is an incredibly effective and cohesive team in place to continue serving¬¬, and that’s directly due to Art’s great leadership and management style.”

Smythe’s retirement will take effect July 1, 2014, after which it is expected that Police Sergeant Brian Olson will take the reigns as the department’s new Chief.

“It’s time for me to pass the baton to Brian Olson, who I believe has earned the opportunity to lead a talented and dedicated group on to the next level,” Smythe said. “It has been a great run and I appreciate the support provided during my 31 years with the Town.”
