[ARCHIVED] Snowmass Town Council Approves Funding for USA Pro Challenge

The Snowmass Village Town Council unanimously approved funding for the overall start of the USA Pro Challenge in Aspen/Snowmass on August 19, 2013.

Referred to as "America's Race," the USA Pro Challenge is the largest spectator event in the history of Colo., attracting more than one million spectators in 2012. This year, the field will feature teams from eight different countries, including the top three teams from the 2012 Tour de France. The event will travel through eight host cities for seven consecutive days.

Aspen/Snowmass has been awarded the 2013 Stage 1 overall start on Monday, August 19th. The race route consists of a three-lap 22-mile circuit between Aspen and Snowmass Village, and features 3,080 ft. of climbing, spectacular scenery, and prime viewing spots for race fans.

On June 6, 2013, the Marketing, Special Events, and Group Sales Board unanimously voted in support of funding the race. Room pick-up, marketing opportunities, and strengthening a partnership with Aspen were key reasons for this decision.

"A circuit race between Aspen and Snowmass Village means racers and fans never leave the community," said Nancy Lesley, director of special events and marketing for the City of Aspen. "We're building a full week of activities with Snowmass Tourism. If you are a cycling fan and coming out for the US Pro Challenge, you don't want to come anywhere but Aspen/Snowmass."

Funding from the Town of Snowmass Village will be used for:

  • Sponsorship funding and lodging in partnership with Aspen and the USA Pro Challenge local organizing committee
  • Dedicated parking for race teams and staff
  • Additional programming in Snowmass Village to support the race, including a team introduction event

Full details on the funding request are available in the Town Council packet.

Community Information and ImpactsThe approval kicks off a robust local communications effort.

"As excitement builds around the USA Pro Challenge, there will inevitably be impacts on the community as a result of event lead-up operations, and the race itself," said Kelly Vaughn, director of communications for the Town of Snowmass Village. "Our goal is to reach out to everyone who may be impacted early and often so residents and businesses can plan accordingly, and we can all take part in putting the Village's best foot forward to welcome racers and visitors."

Neighborhood meeting are scheduled to share information about lead up events, the race course, and impacts.

  • Tuesday, June 25th at 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 16th at 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 25th at 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 8th at 4:00 p.m.

All meetings will be held in the Council Chambers at Snowmass Village Town Hall, 130 Kearns Rd.
