Preparing for the USA Pro Challenge? Ten Things To Check Off Your List

Posted on July 30, 2014 at 11:19 AM by Kelly Vaughn

The USA Pro Challenge is returning to Aspen/Snowmass on Monday, August 18th. But, as exciting as the USA Pro Challenge is, it also has some impacts on the community. Here's a few things you might not have thought about as you and your family or business prepare for the event.

1. Plan your commute
From 1-5 p.m. on August 18th there will be no vehicular traffic able to enter or exit Snowmass Village via Owl Creek or Brush Creek Roads with the exception of emergency vehicles. Motorists are encouraged to travel prior to 1 p.m. or after 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 19th starting at approximately 10:30 a.m., expect up to 30 minutes delays on Highway 82 from Aspen to Carbondale.

If you ride the bus (RFTA and/or the Village Shuttle), a detailed summary of route/schedule impacts will be available on aspensnowmassupc.com's commuter page.

2. Think about deliveries
The road closures will apply to delivery vehicles as well as passenger vehicles. Please coordinate with your suppliers and schedule deliveries accordingly.

3. Check your appointments
If your 12 p.m. dentist appointment in Basalt runs five minutes over will you be able to get to where you need to go before 1:00? Take a look at your calendar and think about how the road closures impact your appointments (even if they are scheduled before or after the road closures).

4. Notify your guests and visitors
If a friend or family member is planning a visit, direct them to aspensnowmassupc.com to learn more about the race and local impacts. Remember, they likely don't read our local paper!

5. Schedule your shifts
Employers and employees that have shift changes between 1-5 p.m. should pay close attention to commuter impacts and plan accordingly.

6. Get excited for pre-race events
Whether you're a cycling fan or not, there's something for everyone! Join us to celebrate the race with festivities in Aspen and Snowmass Village starting with the Snowmass Rodeo on Wednesday. View the full calendar of events.

7. Plan your transportation/parking

The upper numbered lots (8-12) will be used to accommodate race team parking and support staff, and will be closed to public parking Friday, Aug. 15th through Tuesday, Aug. 19th. Team parking is open to the public and worth checking out, but please park elsewhere during the event.

Parking is available at the intercept lot and Brush Creek and Hwy 82, at Town Park station and the rodeo lot, or in the Base Village parking garage.

8. Stay in the know
Sign up for PitkinAlert to receive real-time updates to your land line, cell phone, or email.

9. Stake out your prime viewing spot(s)
There's no bad spot to watch the Aspen/Snowmass circuit (anywhere you set up shop along the race route, you are guaranteed to see the peloton pass three times). Almost the entire route is paralleled by a bike/walking path, allowing spectators to move freely from location to location by bike or foot. View the route map online and you'll see that the options are endless!

10. Play a role in putting our best foot forward
Volunteers are still needed for a variety of positions including course marshals, ambassadors, security, green team, and pre-event logistics. Visit aspensnowmassupc.com to register as a volunteer.
