Why Do We Need a New Transit Center?
World-class resorts require world-class transit services. The Village Shuttle and RFTA provide approximately 1 million rides each year through the Snowmass Mall and the capacities of both RFTA and Village Shuttle facilities are frequently reached during peak times.
What is the Current Status of the Transit Center?
Over the past 40 years, the Town has continually focused its efforts on finding the best solution for improving Transit access to and from the Snowmass Mall. In June of 2024, the Town Council gave staff the direction to pursue a plan for incremental improvements to the RFTA and Village Shuttle Depots. These improvements would include:
- Adding another bus bay to the existing RFTA Depot to better accommodate peak rider loading/offloading.
- Improving the West End of the mall by making it at-grade with the RFTA depot and thus providing safer and more ADA-compliant access to the mall.
- The addition of public restrooms to the RFTA Depot.
- Improving the Lot 6 crosswalk and staircase to create a safer and more intuitive pedestrian environment.
- The improvement and possible addition of elevators in the Village Shuttle depot for better connections to and from the Snowmass Mall level.
- A possible future phase could include further improvements to the Village Shuttle depot to accommodate more bus bays.
In March of 2024, the Town Council further directed staff to pursue the feasibility of a novel design for a combined Transit Center at the West End of the Mall. These designs are currently being reviewed by the Town Council.

New Snowmass Mall Transit Center
Building on the direction of Town Council, Town staff are developing a design for an improved transit experience at the terminus of the Snowmass Mall. This project engages transit partners, including Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA), and the design firm, SEH. The design team was selected based on their expertise in transit facilities.
The design is currently underway, and input from the town, transit partners, and user groups is being incorporated.
