Protecting Our Natural Assets

The Town of Snowmass Village recognizes the importance of environmental stewardship. We believe that achieving sustainability in all aspects of our business contributes to better living conditions for our residents. The Town Council continues to identify environmental stewardship as a key priority in their Strategic Goals.

Sustainability Plan

In 2009, the Town Council adopted an environmental sustainability plan to bring ecological awareness into all aspects of town governance. This plan was created with the help of the Rocky Mountain Institute and Snowmass citizens.

This plan is being reviewed and implemented by the Environmental Advisory Board. In 2020, the EAB presented an update to the Sustainability Plan to the Town Council.

Greenhouse Gas Reporting

Pitkin County completes greenhouse gas (GHG) reports every three years going back to 2014 to track its progress towards meeting its GHG reduction goal and to highlight areas of opportunity to reduce emissions. The reports include a GHG inventory that looks at the key GHG emitting sectors and uses activity data to estimate the quantity of GHGs emitted by each sector accompanied by narrative explanations of data trends. The inventories follow the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories, which is the industry standard for local government GHG inventories.

Pitkin County Region Comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report 2023

Most recently, Pitkin County, the City of Aspen, the Town of Snowmass Village, and the Town of Basalt worked together in a successful partnership to collect data and produce the Pitkin County Region Comprehensive Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report 2023

Greening Town Facilities & Operations

Efforts to reduce the energy consumption associated with town operations have influenced how we build, manage, and operate buildings and facilities. The Town is always searching for opportunities to create efficiencies through energy conservation and resource stewardship.

Carbon Footprint Reports

In 2010, the town completed its first Carbon Footprint Report in collaboration with Climate Mitigation Services, and established its 2020 goal to "reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2020, over the 2009 baseline."

The Town's carbon inventory reports are available below. They provide a baseline understanding of our carbon footprint and allow us to explore concrete ways to reduce our impact.

Environmental Advisory Board

The Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) is the town’s primary resource for environmental sustainability issues and efforts in Snowmass Village. If you have questions about the town’s environmental initiative or projects, please contact the board’s staff liaison, Greg LeBlanc.

The primary directive for EAB is to advise the implementation of the Town's sustainability plan.
